Talvin Singh is one of the most influential figures in contemporary electronica and dance music. Classically trained on the tabla (a set of two hand drums), Singh’s determination to bring traditional Indian music to the attention of mainstream music audiences led him to create an innovative fusion of Indian Bhangra folk music and electronica, heavily influenced by London’s drum’n’bass and ambient music scenes of the 1990s. Through the seminal compilation album Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground (1997), Singh has increased the profile of Asian artists, and further established the Asian club scene in England and mainland Europe. Since 1997 Singh has released a further five albums and, through his career as a composer, performer, DJ and producer, has worked with artists as diverse as Madonna, Björk, David Sylvian, Sun Ra and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. For the APT5 Opening Celebration, Singh will perform Tablatronic, a set of live tabla performed against a backdrop of DJ sounds and beats. Later in the evening he will present a special DJ set.
For Kids’ APT, Talvin Singh has also created a music interactive for children I am Talvin Singh in which kids get a chance to create their own electronic music track using traditional Indian sounds and the latest mixing technology.
