In signature Kawamoto style, meticulously crafted puppets play out a morality tale before beautiful backdrops painted in traditional Japanese styles. The Demon has been widely screened internationally and won the Ofuji Prize at the 1972 Mainchi Japanese Film Contest and a Merit Award at the Annecy International Animation Festival in 1973.

Drawing its aesthetic from historical Japanese landscape painting, Dojoji Temple, is an exploration of the transformative power of passion. The short puppet animation follows a young priest’s pilgrimage to Kumano where he is waylaid by a peasant woman who becomes enamoured of him.

A collaborative project by a group of Japanese and international independent animators, Winter Days is based on the renku poem Fuyu no Hi by the celebrated poet Basho Shichibusyu. Renku (linked verse) is a traditional Japanese form of collaborative poetry. In the film, each animator has contributed a section of two minutes or less in which the poem continues. Winter Days includes contributions from Yuri Norshtein, Raoul Servais Tomoyasu Murata, Keita Kurosaka and Koji Yamamura.

The Worm Story parodies Aesop's fable The Hare and the Tortoise although, in this version, speed and steadiness are embodied by a rabbit and an earthworm. The story turns dark as the terrified rabbit is incinerated by the fire-breathing earthworm. The film careers into an ecstasy of flesh and nature.

After eating cherry pips to avoid waste, a miserly man has a cherry tree sprout from his head. Yamamura’s stunning animation was nominated for an Oscar and won the Grand Prix at Annecy in 2003. A modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese Rakugo story Atama-yama set in contemporary Tokyo.

An old crocodile, feeling too rheumatic to move, eats the closest thing within reach - which unfortunately happens to be his great grandson. Horrified by the old beast’s act of cannibalism, his crocodile family attempt to put him down. Yamamura’s minimal 2D animation is based on Léopold Chauveau’s 1923 story 'Histoire du Vieux Crocodile'.
