SONGSTRESS TO MAMBO GIRL

Popular songs have been part of Mandarin cinema since the introduction of sound in the 1930s. The early genre of gewu pian (dancing and singing films) experimented with synthesis of popular musical entertainment and cinema. The first film to include sound, made by Mingxing Studio in collaboration with Pathé recording company in Shanghai, was The Singing Girl Red Peony (Genü Hong Mudan) 1931, which featured four popular arias. Songstress films were quickly established as a genre in Shanghai in the 1930s and later in Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s.
