YANG ZHENZHONG

b.1968, Xiashan, Guangdong province, China
Lives and works in Shanghai, China

Yang Zhenzhong came to prominence after constraints upon artistic expression in Shanghai were loosened in the 1990s. He is a master of metaphor, and uses humour and the absurd to comment on contemporary life in China. His work parodies the use of film and video in commercial culture, and offers a nuanced and playful political commentary. He is one of many Shanghai-based artists employing digital media to directly reflect upon the urban landscapes and visual motifs of a fast-modernising city. Objects of social status and markers of Chinese identity are set loose from their everyday meanings, and are subject to ironic comment and revaluation. By changing the way we see objects, places and commonplace behaviours, Yang’s videos and photographs reveal the contradictions inherent in everyday urban life.

Yang Zhenzhong has been featured in ‘Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China', International Centre for Photography and the Asia Society, New York, USA, and Germany, in 2004; and ‘Light as Fuck! Shanghai Assemblage 2000–2004', The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo, Norway, in 2004.
