QIN GA

b.1971, Inner Mongolia, China
Lives and works in Beijing, China

Performance artist Qin Ga was a prominent and controversial figure in Beijing’s underground art scene in the 1990s. His work reflects broader trends in performance in Chinese art during this period. Since 2002, he has been involved with the Long March Project as a participating artist. Qin’s works explore the limits of taste, behavioural conventions and physical endurance. He uses the body to break from traditional media practices and aesthetics, and to engage with contemporary notions of Chinese identity. In his work with the Long March Project, he continues his interest in the public aspects and processes of art and the body. For Qin, the body is both a platform and site that mediates relationships between local stories and collective identity, theory and practice, art and cultural history.

In addition to his participation in the Long March Project, Qin Ga has exhibited at 'A Second Sight: Prague Biennale 2', National Gallery Prague, Czech Republic, in 2005; ‘Shanghai Assemblage 2000–2004’, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo, Norway, in 2004; ‘Fuck Off’, Eastlink Gallery, Shanghai, China, in 2000; and 'Partage d'exotismes: 5th Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale', France, in 2000.
